The Department of Emergency Medicine is a large department, staffing five emergency departments and an Urgent Care Center across the health care system.
With more than 100 clinical providers, our team serves a variety of patient populations providing the full spectrum of clinical care, from high complexity tertiary and quaternary care services, to community and urgent care services.
Our mission is to be one of the preeminent Departments of Emergency Medicine in the country by delivering excellent healthcare, with respect and dignity to all patients needing emergent or urgent care services; conducting groundbreaking research that enhances public health; and developing innovative educational programs for all levels of health care providers.
We provide care for service area of over 1.5 million people in Central Massachusetts and bordering states, which includes some of the fastest growing communities in the state.
Seeing approximately 250,000 visits annually across the system, our flagship ED on the University campus has been cited as one of the top 50 busiest emergency departments in the country. Operating both ground and air EMS systems, including critical care transport and mobile integrated health care, and managing the 911 system for medical emergencies in Worcester and surrounding communities, the department provides a unique environment for learning and research.
As an academic department, our core mission includes opportunities for professional development and advancement of our faculty, as this ensures excellence in clinical care, education, research and the professional satisfaction of our caregivers. Supporting each faculty member in his or her professional aspirations is achieved through the commitment of departmental leadership to support career development opportunities and partnerships within and external to the institution.
We are committed to medical student education. The department is integrated into the entire UMass Chan Medical School student experience, throughout all 4 years. Many faculty serve as course directors, mentors and instructors with responsibility for major portions of the student curriculum. Our department is one of the top-funded departments in the country in terms of NIH dollars. We have a strong research infrastructure, which includes administrative and grant support which promotes and supports a broad array of basic science, clinical, and translational research.
The department has created and nurtured an environment that encourages and is supportive of research, welcoming participation at any level, with strong mentorship, encouragement, and effective communication. All of this has come together to create a departmental environment that fosters and supports scholarly work while meeting our clinical and teaching obligations.
