Residency Program Leadership

Richard Church, MD, FACEP, FACMT

Associate Professor, Emergency Medicine and Medical Toxicology

Dr. Church is a board certified emergency medicine and medical toxicology physician. He currently serves as the UMass Chan EM Residency Program Director as well as the EM Medical Education Fellowship Associate Program Director. He mentors EM residents as well as UMass Chan medical students and serves a variety of local committees and programs including the UMass Chan Graduate Medical Education Committee, the SNMA Mentorship Program and the Committee on Equal Opportunity and Diversity as well as national committees such as the ACMT Diversity Workgroup and the CORD-EM Advising Students Committee.

Viral Patel, MD

Associate Program Director, Emergency Medicine Residency Program

Dr Patel is an Associate Professor of Emergency Medicine who currently serves as the Associate Program Director for the EM Residency. He completed his residency in emergency medicine at UMass Chan where he has been employed since graduating. His educational interests include medical education, resident assessment and evaluation, and curriculum development/innovation.

Alexandra Nordberg, MD

Assistant Professor, Emergency Medicine and Emergency Ultrasound

Dr. Nordberg is an Assistant Professor of Emergency Medicine and is currently the Assistant Program Director of the UMass Chan Emergency Medicine Residency. She is dedicated to optimizing medical education by individualizing residents' focus with individualized learning programs, as well as expanding upon residency curriculum experiences. She is involved in multiple department and institution committees and currently serves nationally on the SAEM education committee. She enjoys mentoring residents and students to have a successful career and work life integration.
