Name: Joseph Daniel, DO
Medical School: University of New England College of Osteopathic Medicine

About Me: I grew up in several places as a child but moved near Springfield, MA, in middle school. I attended UMass Amherst, where I majored in Kinesiology. During college I initially was interested in pursuing sports journalism but after taking anatomy and physiology I pivoted to an interest in medicine. I attended medical school at the University of New England College of Osteopathic Medicine in Maine and then returned to Massachusetts to complete my internal medicine residency. At UMass, I learned a lot on how to take care of really sick patients, and the teaching and mentoring was outstanding. Outside of medicine, some hobbies of mine include watching cooking shows with my girlfriend, trying different foods in the area, saying active, and listening to live music.

Name: Tess Decater, MD, MPH
Medical School: St. George’s University School of Medicine

About Me: I grew up in Southbury, Connecticut, and stayed close to home for college, attending the University of Connecticut (go Huskies!) where I studied Biology and Sociology. I then earned my MD/MPH at St. George’s University School of Medicine, spending two and a half years on the beautiful island of Grenada, followed by two years of clinical training in Brooklyn, New York. I was thrilled to match at UMass for residency where I’ve spent the past three years continually inspired by the supportive, dedicated, and passionate community. It is a true honor to serve as one of the Chief Residents and to give back to the program that has given me so much. Outside of medicine, I enjoy glamping, cheering on the WooSox, bowling, and exploring new restaurants. After my chief year, I hope to pursue a career in Allergy and Immunology.

Name: Nicolas Fandino-Rubio, MD
Medical School: University of Arizona College of Medicine

About Me: I grew up in Bogotá, Colombia, and moved to the U.S. in my early teens, settling just outside of Boston. I attended UMass Amherst, where I majored in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology. After college, I worked at Brigham and Women’s Hospital conducting asthma clinical research. It was there that I discovered my love for patient care, which ultimately led me to pursue a career in medicine. I attended medical school at the University of Arizona College of Medicine in Tucson and then returned to Massachusetts to complete my internal medicine residency. At UMass, I’ve found immense joy in caring for a diverse patient population within a collaborative, welcoming environment. I’ve also been lucky to train alongside some of the most compassionate people I know, my co-residents, many of whom have become lifelong friends. Outside of medicine, I share my life with my partner, Nicole, and our little cat, Oliver. I love attending Boston sporting events, trying new restaurants, and—as a proud Colombian—enjoying a great cup of coffee, playing soccer, and salsa dancing.

Name: Tyler Jones, MD
Medical School: University of Oklahoma

About me: I grew up in the small town of Fort Gibson, Oklahoma. After graduating high school, I attended the University of Oklahoma where I majored in Biology and minored in Chemistry. I then completed medical school at the University of Oklahoma and matched at UMass Chan Medical School. Since joining the program, I have enjoyed not only the diverse patient populations and pathologies, but also the colleagues and faculty I have worked with. Even with being a transplant from another part of the country, I immediately felt I was a part of the UMass family. I am honored to be one of the chiefs and look forward to the year ahead. Outside of medicine, I love watching Oklahoma Sooner football games, exploring new breweries, and spending time with my co-chiefs/residents. After residency, I hope to pursue a career in cardiology.

Name: Mason Winkie, MD
Medical School: West Virginia University

About me: I was born and raised in the heart of Appalachia in the town of Bridgeport, West Virginia. I completed my undergraduate degree at West Virginia Wesleyan College where I majored in Biochemistry and Clinical Psychology. Following college, I spent one year in Uherský Brod, Czech Republic, as an English Teaching Assistant under a Fulbright Grant. I then completed medical school at West Virginia University where I developed a passion for internal medicine and later gastroenterology. I couple matched with my wife (Family Medicine) for residency at UMass as we had some family in the nearby area. What I love about our Internal Medicine Residency program is the people and the clinical training. Everyone is welcoming and ready to teach at any moment. I am excited to be one of the chiefs this year and have the opportunity to contribute even more to our wonderful educational environment. Outside of medicine, I love hanging out with my wife, Spencer, and dog Brownie (a 120lb Newfoundland). We check out local breweries and hike everywhere with the occasional overnight back packing trip here and there. After residency, I hope to pursue a career in gastroenterology.
