The close collaboration with our clinical partners from pulmonology and cardiology affords our fellows learning opportunities in interventional pulmonology and cardiology, as well as in echocardiography. We also collaborate with our clinical counterparts on a weekly basis with multidisciplinary conferences, including an interstitial lung disease conference, a thoracic oncology tumor board, a lung cancer screening conference, a radiology-pulmonology and a radiology-cardiology case conference.

The CTI section interprets approximately 110,000 studies per year. Our CTI faculty currently includes 6 attendings, all of which are devoted teachers and/or researchers. The CTI section also hosts a growing number of research fellows. Clinical interests of the CTI section focus on the imaging of interstitial lung disease, airway imaging, imaging of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, oncological imaging, imaging of cardiac disease, both adult and pediatric, and the imaging of cardio-pulmonary interactions. The CTI section also runs a rapidly growing CT lung cancer screening program. Our fellows participate in daily teaching rounds, as well as in a number of multidisciplinary clinical conferences. Finally, our fellows are encouraged and supported to actively participate in national and international CTI meetings and conferences.

The Department of Radiology at UMass Memorial Medical Center, UMMMC, (www.umassmed.edu/radiology) performs over 1 million studies per year, across five hospitals and an outpatient imaging center. Current faculty include 65+ fellowship trained Radiologists, all practicing in organ or modality-based divisions, and a 24/7/365 Emergency Radiology Division. The department trains 5 Residents per year (20 total) and currently has 9 dedicated clinical fellowships The department has an enterprise-wide PACS system (AGFA and TeraRecon), as well as EPIC EMR. The main department and outpatient imaging center in Worcester have 6 MRIs (including a new GE Pioneer 3T system), 7 CTs, including a Siemens “flash” and two Siemens 128 Definition Edge CTs.

UMMMC and the Comprehensive Stroke Center of Massachusetts are the largest health care system in Central Massachusetts, covering over 1 million patients.  We are the clinical partner of UMass Chan Medical School, with access to the latest technology, research cores, and clinical trials. In addition to our fully equipped medical centers, our system also includes home health and hospice programs, behavioral health programs and community-based physician practices. UMass Memorial is located in Central Massachusetts and is close to all the lifestyle benefits of New England, including Boston, Cape Cod, and numerous other surrounding recreational areas. Our faculty live in or close to downtown Boston and enjoy a hassle-free “Reverse” commute to Worcester. Other faculty members live closer to the University, both within the city of Worcester and the neighboring towns such as Shrewsbury and Westborough.

The CTI section has a highly active research program. The section holds weekly research meetings, including both didactic sessions and work-in-progress presentations. The section is a recognized leader in several areas of CTI-research. The section also provides a robust research infrastructure and is currently partnering with a substantial number of industry partners, notably in the field of artificial intelligence, machine learning, computer-aided detection and -characterization, and image processing. The CTI section serves as a center of excellence for several of these industry partners.  

Each fellow is encouraged to perform one original research project under the guidance of our faculty members. Fellows will be allotted ½ day academic time/week dedicated to research, pending approval of a research topic and a written proposal. Fellows are encouraged to submit their research to a peer-reviewed journal and submit educational and research abstracts to national meetings such as STR, NASCI, and RSNA.

Each fellow is allocated four weeks of elective time, during which the fellow may rotate through thoracic oncology, including PET-CT, pediatric thoracic imaging, and thoracic intervention, or may create special electives pending approval from the program director and section chief. Additionally, fellows are allotted 4 weeks of vacation per year and five days of conference time.
