June Fellow Spotlight: Tina Zheng, MD
In this month’s Fellow Spotlight, we feature Tina Zheng, MD, a hematology/oncology fellow at UMass Chan. We recently caught up with Dr. Zheng to learn more about her clinical and research interests, why she chose UMass Chan for her fellowship, and why Guatemala is her favorite place to travel!
Hometown?
Shenyang, China, and Newton, MA
What are your clinical and research interests?
I'm interested in treating myeloid neoplasms, particularly in older adults. I'm especially interested in understanding treatment outcomes in this population, which is underrepresented in clinical trials despite accounting for a large proportion of patients affected by these diseases.
Why did you choose UMass Chan for your fellowship?
I chose UMass Chan because of its diverse patient population, broad spectrum of disease pathology, and supportive and approachable faculty. I was particularly attracted to the program's culture, which values both hard work and quality of life. I didn't know what I wanted to focus on when I started fellowship, and the well-rounded training at UMass gave me the opportunity to explore different areas of hematology and oncology before ultimately identifying my clinical and research interests.
Where is your favorite place to travel for vacation and why?
Guatemala has been one of my favorite places to visit. I have so many unforgettable memories from traveling to Antigua and Lake Atitlán on vacation, but also from spending time there taking medical Spanish classes in medical school and rotating at a cancer hospital in Guatemala City during residency. The people are some of the friendliest, the cultural roots are so deep, and the landscape is stunning.
In your spare time, what TV show do you binge?
90-Day Fiancé (also 90-Day the Other Way and Before the 90 Days) is my ultimate guilty pleasure.
Favorite holiday?
Lunar New Year. It's a reason to celebrate in the middle of winter, and it's all about food in my family.
Favorite guilty pleasure snack?
Sour gummy candies. I know they are so bad for me, and I will eat a bag of any size in one sitting. I don't let myself keep any in the house!
