In this month’s Resident Spotlight, we feature Michelle Nabi, MD, a third-year Internal Medicine Resident. We recently caught up with Dr. Nabi to learn more about her clinical and research interests, what makes UMass Chan a great place for residency, and why Norouz is her favorite holiday!

Hometown?

Milton, MA

What are your clinical and research interests?
My first clinical rotation on the heart failure service left a lasting impression on me. I was struck by how guideline-directed medical therapy could be tailored to each patient, and I found it deeply rewarding to witness the meaningful improvements in their quality of life. This experience sparked my interest in the intersection of individualized care and evidence-based treatment in cardiovascular medicine.

Are you involved in any other groups or activities at UMass Chan that you’d like to highlight?
I enjoy working on the Hydrating Hearts Initiative, my quality improvement project aimed at reducing NPO time before cardiac catheterizations. It’s a constant reminder that even small, targeted changes can lead to meaningful impact in patient care.

What makes UMass Chan a great place for your residency?
UMass Chan stood out as a program where residents and faculty enjoy working and training together. It has been a dream come true for me to be a part of it.

Favorite hobbies?
Outside of medicine, I enjoy playing tennis as it keeps me active, sharpens my focus, and offers a fun way to unwind. Traveling is another passion of mine. I love immersing myself in new cultures, trying different cuisines, and gaining fresh perspectives. I also enjoy exploring new coffee shops, whether it’s to discover unique brews or simply to enjoy a quiet moment in a cozy setting.

Favorite thing to do in Worcester/Worcester area?
Spending time with my firm - Kelley! Some of my favorite residency memories come from our shared laughs.

Favorite holiday?
My favorite holiday is Nowruz, the Persian New Year. It’s a celebration of renewal, marking the arrival of spring and symbolizing fresh starts. What I love most is how it brings family and friends together, gathering around the Haft-Seen table, sharing traditional meals, and honoring age-old customs passed down through generations. It’s a time filled with joy, reflection, and connection, and it always reminds me of the importance of culture, community, and hope for the year ahead.

Favorite guilty pleasure snack?
Coke Zero and chips, definitely not low in salt!

What song/artist do you hope comes on first when you press random play on your playlist?
“Lose Yourself” by Eminem. “If you had one shot or one opportunity…, would you capture it or let it slip?”
