June Resident Spotlight: Alex Ge, MD
In this month’s Resident Spotlight, we feature Alex Ge, MD, a second-year categorical Internal Medicine Resident. We recently caught up with Dr. Ge to learn more about his clinical and research interests, what makes UMass Chan a great place for residency, and his favorite things to do in the Worcester/Worcester area!
Hometown?
Belle Mead, New Jersey
What are your clinical and research interests?
My career goal is to become a hematologist/oncologist who is actively involved in patient care, clinical research, and mentoring the next generation of doctors. My research interests lie at the intersection of data science and health policy, and I am currently studying how countries across the world evaluate and reimburse novel yet costly cancer therapies. While new treatments such as CAR-T cells have the potential to be lifesaving, they also present challenges related to health care spending and infrastructure, which limit access both in the US and internationally.
Are you involved in any other groups or activities at UMass Chan that you’d like to highlight?
I helped create and currently run the hematology/oncology interest group for the internal medicine residents. We have hosted social events where residents, fellows, and faculty can connect and support those applying for fellowship. I also enjoy medical student teaching—I am a longitudinal preceptor for the medical school and have taught in the simulation lab.
What makes UMass Chan a great place for your residency?
I chose UMass Chan for its strong clinical training, emphasis on resident wellness, exposure to bone marrow transplants, and close proximity to family. It was the perfect combination of features I was looking for in a residency program! I have since found that the faculty and leadership here care deeply about resident growth, both clinically and professionally, and that is what makes this place feel special.
Favorite hobbies?
I love playing the piano. I met my wife in music school, where I studied piano and she studied saxophone. My favorite pieces are the Rachmaninoff piano concertos. I also spend as much time as possible outdoors, which includes time spent gardening with my wife.
Favorite thing to do in Worcester/Worcester area?
In the spring, I like walking through the botanical garden, especially when the rhododendrons are in full bloom. In the fall, you can find me apple and pear picking or hiking up Mount Monadnock in New Hampshire.
