September Resident Spotlight: Avery Gulino, MD 
In this month’s Resident Spotlight, we feature Avery Gulino, MD, a second-year, categorical Internal Medicine Resident at UMass Chan. We recently caught up with Dr. Gulino to learn more about her clinical and research interests, why she chose UMass Chan for residency, and her favorite things to do around Worcester.

San Diego, CA
What are your clinical and research interests?
I’m interested in cardiology and caring for patients with complex cardiovascular disease, with a particular interest in cardio-obstetrics and the intersection of cardiovascular and systemic disease. My research interests include cardiovascular imaging, inflammatory cardiomyopathies, and clinical outcomes research. I especially enjoy projects that allow me to explore how we can better understand cardiovascular disease and translate that knowledge into improved patient care.
Are you involved in any other groups or activities at UMass Chan that you’d like to highlight?
I’m involved in Women in Medicine, which has been a wonderful source of support throughout my first year of residency and has helped me build confidence both personally and professionally. I’m also involved in the Longitudinal Preceptor Program (a mentoring program for medical students) and the Resuscitation: Failure to Rescue Committee, as well as the Diversity Action Council. I’ve really enjoyed the opportunities these groups provide to connect with colleagues, contribute to the UMass community, and continue growing both personally and professionally.
What makes UMass Chan a great place for your residency?
It’s cliché, but the people. I’ve been consistently impressed by how supportive, collaborative, and genuinely invested everyone is in helping each other succeed. From co-residents to attendings and the broader UMass community, I’ve felt welcomed and supported from the beginning. I also really value the diversity of patients and clinical experiences here, which makes residency both challenging and rewarding.
Favorite Hobbies?
Baking and running are historically my favorites. However, as anyone I’ve worked nights with knows, I also love GeoGuessr, and lately I’ve been getting more into biking.
Favorite thing to do in Worcester/Worcester area?
Volturno’s 2 for 1 nights are a classic, as are WooSox games and Wormtown Brewery in the summer. In the winter, Wooden Bar for ramen and pottery at Claytime kept me going. Also, hiking and running trails in the area are abundant and well maintained, and my favorite for running is the West Boylston Rail Trail.
What is your go-to board game?
Canasta. It’s a family card game that was taught to us by my Bolivian grandparents. It’s a fast-paced game that is traditionally played silently to discourage collaboration between partners. It’s also a great mix of luck and strategy, so it never gets old.
Favorite guilty pleasure snack?
Sunflower butter dark chocolate cups from Trader Joe's. 10/10.
What song/artist do you hope comes on first when you press random play on your playlist?
Right now, Sierra Ferrell. I’d also be very happy with Fleetwood Mac, ABBA, or Noah Kahan.
