Adjunct Faculty Appointment
In accordance with the Academic Personnel Policy (APP), section 6.4, Individuals who hold a primary faculty appointment at another academic or research institution may be appointed as Adjunct Faculty based on their expected contributions to UMass Chan educational and research programs.  The term “Adjunct” precedes the academic rank: e.g., Adjunct Professor of Department. Individuals may be reappointed annually on review and recommendation by the chair or GSN Dean and approval by the SOM Dean (if applicable) and Provost or their designee.

Visiting Faculty Appointment
In accordance with the APP, section 6.5, Individuals who hold a primary faculty appointment at another academic or research institution and who intend to participate in UMass Chan educational and research programs for a limited time (usually up to one year) may be appointed as Visiting Faculty.  Visiting Faculty Members are usually appointed at the academic rank (or equivalent) that the individual holds at their primary institution. The term “Visiting” precedes the academic rank: e.g., Visiting Professor of Department.

Adjunct Faculty Appointment Process

Adjunct Faculty Members are appointed by a modified procedure similar to the regular appointment process with the following exceptions: 

• Adjunct faculty appointments DO need a letter from their primary academic department chair confirming the faculty member is in good standing.
• Adjunct faculty appointments do NOT need the letters of evaluations.

Visiting Faculty Appointment Process

Visiting Faculty Members are appointed by a modified procedure that does not require review by DPAC, PAC or Executive Council. 

To appoint an individual in the DoM as a Visiting Faculty Member:
The Division Chief will submit the following to Gennie Ludovico: 

1. A letter of request that includes the dates of the visiting appointment, not to exceed a year**
2. The candidate's CV
3. The name and email of the candidate's department chair at their primary institution.

Gennie Ludovico will: 

1. Submit the letter of request to the department chair for approval
2. Obtain the letter of confirmation from the candidate's primary institution
3. Submit the DoM department chair letter of request, CV & letter from primary institution to the Office of Faculty Affairs for administrative approval.

**Visiting Faculty appointments are allowed to be extended up to one additional year.  Visiting appointments for longer than two years are not allowed; individuals requiring a longer appointment must be appointed as Adjunct Faculty.
