Faculty Promotion Process Overview
Overview
Promotion in rank is a significant milestone in the academic career of a faculty member and serves as a crucial indicator of their professional success. The promotion process involves review of a faculty member's academic achievements by both faculty peer committees, the Dean, Provost and Chancellor. Below is the overview of the full process.
Faculty Promotions Process
**Please note that all promotions for employed faculty must be approved and initiated by the Division Chief. Once notified of the request for promotion, the DOM appointments & promotions team will contact the candidate and solicit materials to be included in their Basic File.
- These include a CV in the UMass Chan Medical School format as well as a proposed list of names of individuals who will write letters of evaluation on their behalf. This list should be generated with input from their Division Chief.
- The Department may add or subtract individuals from the candidate’s list but must include at least two individuals from the list. More information about letters of evaluation.
- The DOM appointments & promotions team solicits the letters of evaluation, which are added to the candidate's Basic File.
- The Departmental Personnel Action Committee (DPAC) reviews the candidate's Basic File (which consists of the candidate’s CV, narrative statement, letters of evaluation and teaching evaluations).
- The DPAC determines whether the candidate meets the criteria for promotion to the proposed academic rank and writes a letter of recommendation, which is added to the candidate's Basic File.
- The department chair reviews the candidate’s Basic File and writes a letter of recommendation, which is added to the candidate's file.
- The candidate's Basic File is submitted to the Office of Faculty Affairs, where it is reviewed for completeness.
- The Basic File is reviewed by the TH Chan School of Medicine Personnel Action Committee (PAC) at their next regularly scheduled meeting to evaluate the candidate for promotion and submit their recommendation.
- The Executive Council (governing body of UMass Chan) has a 10-day review of the list of proposed appointments and promotions.
- The Dean, Provost & Chancellor approve the final list of recommendations.
- Promotion is effective the date that the Chancellor approves the promotion.
- The letter confirming faculty promotion is sent to the candidates. Learn more.
