Faculty Promotion Resources

Overview

Promotion in rank is a significant milestone in the academic career of a faculty member and serves as a crucial indicator of their professional success.

All promotions require the below documentation: 

  1. CV in UMass Chan format
  2. Narrative Statement (not required, but recommended)
  3. List of letter writers for evaluation of candidates
  4. Evidence of Teaching Effectiveness.

Non-Tenure Track Resources

Assistant Professor

Criteria: Candidates for promotion to Assistant Professor in either the non-tenure or tenure track must demonstrate Entry level of achievement in at least one Area of Distinction plus Entry level of achievement in one other category.

Associate Professor

Criteria: Candidates for appointment or promotion to Associate Professor in the non-tenure track  must demonstrate all of the following:

  1. Established level of achievement in an Area of Distinction

  2. Entry level of achievement in at least two other categories; and

  3. At least Entry level of achievement in Education

Professor

Criteria: Candidates for appointment or promotion to Professor in the Non-Tenure Track must demonstrate all of the following:

  1. Senior level of achievement in an Area of Distinction;

  2. Established level of achievement in at least one other category;

  3. Entry level of achievement in at least one other category; and

  4. At least Entry level of achievement in Education

Tenure Track Resources- Associate Professor & Professor

Associate Professor

Criteria: Criteria for Faculty in the Tenure Track and with Tenure. Candidates for appointment or promotion to Associate Professor in the Tenure Track or with Tenure must demonstrate all of the following:

  1. Established level of achievement in an Area of Distinction

  2. Established level of achievement in at least one other category; 

  3. Entry level of achievement in at least one other category; 

  4. At least Entry level of achievement in Education; and

  5. National recognition for scholarship

Professor

Criteria: Candidates for appointment or promotion to Professor in the Tenure Track or with Tenure must demonstrate all of the following:

  1. Senior level of achievement in an Area of Distinction;

  2. Senior level of achievement in at least one other category;

  3. Established level of achievement in at least one other category; and

  4. At least Entry level of achievement in Education
