"We are honored to nominate our colleague, Dr. Mona Korgoankar, for the Joseph T. Ferrucci Jr. Radiologist of the Year Award, in recognition of her outstanding contributions to clinical care and resident education.

Dr. Korgoankar has served UMass as a practicing radiologist for 46 years, exemplifying unwavering dedication to high-quality patient care and to training the next generation of radiologists—particularly in musculoskeletal (MSK) imaging, the cornerstone of her career. Her early passion for the field is evident from her 1973 MD thesis, Radiological Study of Rheumatoid Arthritis. She completed her radiology residency at Boston University Hospital and her fellowship at Worcester City Hospital, then a major teaching affiliate of UMass Medical School, where she began her enduring commitment to the central Massachusetts community.

Throughout her career, Dr. Korgoankar has made a lasting impact on both patient care and medical education. She led the MSK division with distinction and played a pivotal role in resident training. Her teaching legacy includes memorable monthly conferences, MSK radiology electives for fourth-year medical students, board review sessions for senior residents, and her highly regarded “on-call” lecture series for junior residents.

She has consistently created a rich learning environment, emphasizing both interpretive and technical skills in MSK radiology. Her hands-on teaching style fostered reflective practice and critical thinking, ensuring trainees develop not only diagnostic proficiency but also a strong foundation in patient-centered care. Her instruction in interpreting MSK radiographs and performing arthrogram injections has been particularly impactful.

In recent years, Dr. Korgoankar has transitioned to remote work, yet her commitment remains steadfast. Each day, she continues to diligently interpret MSK radiographs, helping to meet the growing demands of our healthcare system.

In summary, Dr. Mona Korgoankar is a deeply deserving candidate for this prestigious award, having dedicated her career to excellence in clinical radiology and the education of future radiologists."

Congratulations and thank you Dr. Korgoankar!
