2025 Edward H. Smith, MD, Annual Lectureship in Radiology

We were delighted to welcome Dr. Mathias Prokop as the18th Annual Edward Smith Lecturer. The annual lecture was presented on Friday, June 6 as part of the department of radiology's graduation celebration. During this event the Joseph T. Ferrucci Radiologist of the Year was honored.
Dr. Prokop is Professor of Radiology and Chairman of the Department of Medical Imaging in Nijmegen in the Netherlands. He studied Medicine and Physics in Germany, with a short stint at Albert Einstein College of Medicine in New York. He trained at Hanover Medical School in Germany. His career took him to Vienna, Austria and Utrecht in the Netherlands, where he established himself as one of the pioneers of novel CT technologies and lung screening.
Dr. Prokop moved to Nijmegen in the East of the Netherlands in 2009 and has since built one of the largest research groups in Europe, ranked 3rd worldwide by USNews & World Report. His focus is on impactful innovations in medical imaging that contribute to better care while keeping medicine affordable. He has published well over 300 articles and various books. He is an honorary member of numerous international radiological societies. During his time as the Chairman of the Dutch Radiological Society, he initiated a change in strategy that helped a generation of young radiologists find permanent positions and strengthened the position of our discipline relative to other specialties. He now serves as board member of the European Society of radiology and will become President of the ECR in 2027.

The Edward H. Smith, M.D. Annual Lectureship in Radiology at the UMass Chan Medical School has been established to honor Dr. Smith’s service over two decades as Chair of the Department. Dr. Smith’s vision for developing Radiology at UMass and his ability to attract and retain talented faculty created the foundations for the thriving Department we see today. In recognition of his leadership and dedication, this Lectureship will invite leaders of our specialty to share their clinical experience and scientific achievements.
