Julianna Buchwald, PhD
Former RTI Lab: Doctoral Candidate, Khvorova Lab
Training Period: 2018–2025
Prior Academic Degree Institution: University of Pittsburgh
Awards: 2018: Postbaccalaureate Intramural Research Training Award; 2020 PACE Prize for Gene Silencing with siRNA During Liver Machine Preservation to Alleviate Ischemia Reperfusion Injury of Severely Ischemic Liver Grafts
Juli Buchwald received her BS in Chemistry from the University of Pittsburgh in 2017. Before joining the MD/PhD Medical Scientist Training Program at UMass Chan in 2018, she received a Postbaccalaureate Intramural Research Training Award to study at the NIH National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases. Juli’s thesis aims to develop novel siRNA-based therapeutics for the treatment of heart, lung, and liver ischemia-reperfusion injury for use in the organ preservation and transplantation process. She is an aspiring cardiothoracic transplant surgeon-scientist, inspired by her time at the University of Pittsburgh, at UMass Chan, and at Massachusetts General Hospital, where she works in collaboration with leading surgeon-scientists in Cardiothoracic Surgery. Outside of the lab, Juli can be found kayaking, reading, and hiking.
