Michael A. Brehm, PhD

  • Co-Director, Diabetes Center of Excellence

  • Professor of Molecular Medicine, The Harvey A. Shultz Chair in Diabetes

  • Co-Director, UMass Chan Humanized Mouse Core

Dr. Brehm specializes in novel preclinical models that simulate human immune responses to investigate approaches for downregulating and activating the human immune system in the treatment of type 1 diabetes (T1D) and cancer. His laboratory examines human beta cells from individuals with T1D in vivo as they interact with intact immune systems from those same donors. The ultimate goal is to understand the etiology and pathogenesis of autoimmune T1D to develop new therapies or drugs for personalized medicine.
