UMass Diabetes Center of Excellence: Advancing Research, Education and Care

At the UMass Diabetes Center of Excellence, our vision is simple but bold: a world without diabetes. Led by internationally recognized experts David Harlan, MD, and Dale Greiner, PhD, we are proud to feature world-class diabetes research, patient care, and medical education.

Innovative Research for a Healthier Future

Our research stands out because we focus on studying real human tissues and cells. By using advanced models—such as our unique “humanized” mice—we can closely mimic how diabetes develops in people. Our scientists collaborate to uncover the causes of both type 1 and type 2 diabetes, with the goal of developing new treatments and, ultimately, a cure.

"We believe all people with diabetes deserve comprehensive, individualized care.  They're the most important member of their care team, so we work with them, providing effective treatments and education. The discoveries made by our scientists are bringing us closer to understanding the root causes of diabetes, preventing the disease in people at risk, and ultimately, a cure."

- David Harlan, MD, co-director of the UMass Chan Diabetes Center of Excellence

Personalized, Team-Based Diabetes Care

We know that every person’s diabetes journey is unique. That’s why our care team takes a personalized, patient-centered approach. We work closely with each individual, making them an active member of their care team. Our specialists—including endocrinologists, nurse practitioners, diabetes educators, and nutritionists—work together to provide the most up-to-date treatments and resources.

Medical Education and Training

UMass Chan Medical School ranks among the top 10% nationwide in primary care according to the annual U.S. News & World Report rankings of the best graduate schools in the country. The report also ranks us as one of the top research institutions, preparing the next generation of diabetes experts to responsibly and effectively treat the disease and conduct research to investigate its causes. Our work remains at the forefront of innovative educational initiatives as we train physicians, nurse practitioners, nurses, and diabetes educators.
