Facilities & Partnerships
Under the co-direction of David M. Harlan, MD and Dale Greiner, PhD, the UMass Diabetes Center of Excellence (DCOE) fosters clinical & basic diabetes research with clinicians and investigators from all over the world. The UMass Chan Medical School is consistently ranked as one of the leading medical schools in the nation for primary care education by U.S. News & World Report.
Albert Sherman Center
DCOE research labs are located on the 7th floor of this 512,000-square-foot facility on the UMass Chan Medical School campus. It was designed for advanced biomedical research and medical education. The building brings together world-class experts with laboratories conducting basic and clinical research, and it promotes interdisciplinary collaboration to facilitate the transition of therapeutic innovations from the laboratory to clinical practice.
Breakthrough T1D New England Research Collaborative
Fifteen UMass Chan DCOE scientists collaborate with researchers at Harvard Medical School, Joslin Diabetes Center, University of Toronto, and The Jackson Laboratory to create and transplant stem cell-derived (SC) pancreatic islets into our novel "humanized" mouse models to recreate and study human type 1 diabetes. This research group, led by DCOE co-director David Harlan, MD, is utilizing gene editing technology to engineer the SC islets to evade autoimmune attack. The goal is to develop a cell replacement therapy that eliminates the need for toxic immunosuppressive drugs, which can be scaled for clinical trials and ultimately lead to a cure for type 1 diabetes.
UMass Memorial Health
Our diabetes care team sees about 10,000 patients annually who receive the best available treatment. Personalized care is provided to help with all aspects of diabetes management.
The adult & pediatric diabetes care clinics are located on the second floor of the Ambulatory Care Center at UMass Memorial Medical Center in Worcester. Clinical and translational research are also conducted in the ACC building.
The UMass Memorial Diabetes Center of Excellence partners with the following Central Massachusetts hospitals and healthcare centers to support their clinicians in delivering comprehensive diabetes care within their communities.
