Research

The Department of Dermatology has broad involvement in bench, translational and clinical research. Dr Sarah Whitley is co-director of the UMass Chan Hidradenitis Suppurativa (HS) Center and leads a growing research program that uses basic, translational and clinical approaches to investigate the mechanisms underlying HS and develop novel therapies. Nearly all faculty participate in clinical research, ranging from case reports and series to randomized controlled clinical trials, multicenter studies and consensus guidelines that advance the field of dermatology.

Residents are encouraged to pursue research and scholarly projects that align with their individual interests, and are supported by faculty mentors based upon their level of experience and career goals. Most residents have participated in clinical research and other scholarly activities including case reports and series, reviewing articles, writing textbook chapters, and developing educational materials. For residents with a strong interest in basic science and translational research, a 2+2 clinical training and research track can be considered.  The residency program has been acknowledged by the Dermatology Residency Review Committee and by our own Graduate Medical Education office for outstanding resident participation in research and scholarly activities.
