Electives with UMass Chan GI

UMass Chan GI Electives

Please contact Wendy Rickert with questions regarding electives.

UMass Chan Medical Students
The Division of Gastroenterology offers UMass Chan medical students a four-week elective experience in GI and hepatology during the Horizons phase of the Vista curriculum. Students are encouraged to apply through the medical school. The elective experience varies based on the elective site, but all medical students will gain exposure to general gastroenterology, hepatology, and endoscopy. Students will be integrated into the consult service teams composed of attending physicians, gastroenterology fellows, medical house staff, and/or other medical students. By the end of the elective, medical students will gain knowledge and skill in the diagnosis and management of a broad range of disorders of the gastrointestinal system. Students will have the opportunity to see various endoscopic procedures and interventions, ranging from control of bleeding to foreign body removal to biliary stone extraction.

UMass Chan Internal Medicine Residents
UMass Chan residents can sign up for the GI elective through the IM residency. Electives are offered in one-week blocks; residents may be assigned multiple blocks each academic year. The elective is structured to expose residents to a high volume of patients with a broad spectrum of gastrointestinal, liver, and pancreaticobiliary diseases. Residents are preassigned to either an inpatient team (the University GI Consult Service, University Primary and Liver Consult Service, or Memorial Consult Service) or select outpatient clinics. During their elective week, residents will learn to generate a focused differential diagnosis based on accurate history taking, physical examination, interpretation of available data, and develop patient-specific treatment plans. While joining fellows and faculty during endoscopic procedures, residents will also learn the indications, contraindications, benefits, risks, and limitations of the therapies offered.

External Internal Medicine Residents
Residents coming from external residency programs are welcome to apply to the GI elective. The elective is offered from September through May on our University or Memorial Campus and requires a four-week commitment. A two-week elective may be considered on a case-by-case basis for residents coming from programs within Massachusetts. Applicants are encouraged to apply as early as possible; positions are offered on a first-come, first-served basis. Applicants applying from programs outside of Massachusetts must apply at least 4 months before their anticipated start date to ensure processing of a MA limited medical license.

Outpatient Clinics Electives
GI faculty see patients in various clinics, including general gastroenterology, general hepatology, IBD, pre- and post-liver transplant, HCC, pancreas/advanced therapeutics. The opportunity for an outpatient-focused elective in which external residents or students rotate through various outpatient clinics over the course of the week is available upon request and based on availability.

Observorships
UMass Chan GME does not allow for any resident, student, or former trainee to rotate with us as part of an observorship.

Conferences
Faculty, fellows, and invited guests give lectures and lead discussions on various GI-related topics throughout the year. Residents and students on elective are encouraged to join us for our conferences, held on site at the University Campus, on Wednesdays from 7:30 to 9:00 a.m. and Thursdays from 5:00 to 6:00 pm.
