Advanced Endoscopy Fellowship

The UMass Chan Medical School 4th year Advanced Endoscopy Fellowship Program is comprised of a one-year clinical fellowship designed for recent general gastroenterology fellowship graduates interested in pursuing training in ERCP, EUS, and other advanced endoscopic techniques.

Advanced fellows spend the majority of their time in advanced endoscopy procedures. UMass Chan GI performs more than 1,100 ERCPs and 1,500 EUS procedures yearly across outpatient and inpatient settings. In addition to the management of routine choledocholithiasis, advanced endoscopy fellows have an opportunity to manage complex biliary/pancreatic strictures, choledochoscopy, pancreatoscopy and lithotripsy. The fellows learn to use EUS to stage a variety of gastrointestinal malignancies and perform FNA/FNBs. Therapeutic EUS, such as cystgastrostomy with necrosectomy using lumen-apposing metal stents, EUS-guided gallbladder drainage, as well as EUS-guided gastro-jejunostomy, are an important part of the training. Advanced fellows regularly perform EMR, RFA for Barrett's esophagus, cryotherapy, deep enteroscopy, and enteric stenting. The program also offers significant exposure to bariatric endoscopy; this includes exposure to ESG, TORe, and management of post-bariatric surgery complications (e.g., sleeve leaks, anastomotic stenoses, and fistula repair).

Additionally, our Advanced Endoscopy Program is one of the few in the country that has access to an on-campus animal laboratory. Prior fellows have had ex vivo and in vivo training for endoscopic submucosal dissection (ESD), POEM, and use of new devices and techniques in this setting. Finally, UMass Chan is one of the few programs heavily involved in artificial intelligence development and deployment.

We are currently accepting two advanced endoscopy fellows per year. UMass Chan participates in the ASGE match. Please visit https://www.asgematch.com for further information.
