Cytopathology Fellowship
Fellowship Description
This one-year, ACGME-accredited fellowship program in cytopathology satisfies requirements for taking the American Board of Pathology Added Qualification in Cytopathology examination. Fellows will obtain expertise in all aspects of diagnostic cytopathology including performing and interpreting ultrasound-guided fine needle aspirations (FNAs), interpreting GYN and non-GYN specimens, and appropriate application of ancillary techniques including molecular testing. In addition to training in ultrasound-guided FNA and clinical diagnostic excellence, the program offers exposure to technology development relating to microbiopsy procurement, rapid on-site evaluation (ROSE), and cytologic processing.
As UMass Memorial Medical Center/UMass Chan Medical School is the largest provider of diagnostic pathology services and the major oncology center in Central Massachusetts, we see a wide spectrum of interesting and challenging cases. The volume and complexity of our cases and the opportunities for scholarly pursuits are well-suited for future stars in the field of cytopathology.
Fellows are given increasing responsibility commensurate with ability to perform ultrasound-guided FNA and ROSE. Fellows refine their communication and teaching skills via participation in multi-disciplinary conferences and through resident and medical student teaching responsibilities. Research projects are encouraged, in addition to a required Quality Assurance study, with the support and guidance of an experienced cytopathologist teaching staff.
