Fellowship Program Highlights

We welcome graduates of both pediatric and emergency medicine residency programs.
One fellow accepted per year, allowing for individualized learning opportunities and close mentorship by the pediatric emergency medicine (PEM) faculty.
Early autonomy with progressive clinical and supervisory responsibilities.
Flexible scheduling of shifts to accomodate personal needs.

Weekly PEM educational conference.
Interactive curriculum including didactic lectures, simulation experiences, group discussions, guest lectures, and hands-on workshops.
The faculty of PEM value work-life balance, and have incorporated a wellness curriculum as a regularly occurring segment of the weekly PEM educational conference
Close faculty mentorship and opportunities to explore and develop individualized areas of interest in fields such as ultrasound, simulation, and medical education.

Only program in the region offering fellows the opportunity to obtain a Master’s in Clinical Investigation through UMass Chan Medical School.
Longitudinal research curriculum in which every fellow designs and completes a rigorous scholarly project.
Research and mentorship opportunities with leaders in both the Departments of Pediatrics and Emergency Medicine, along with opportunities to collaborate with faculty across multiple clinical and academic disciplines.
Encouragement and support for presenting results of scholarly project at local and national conferences.

Longitudinal QI curriculum in which every fellow designs and completes a quality improvement project.
Early training in Lean methodology, the QI framework used throughout the UMass health care system.
Monthly Division QI working group for learning QI methodology, developing ideas, and receiving feedback on ongoing projects.
Opportunity to pursue advanced QI training, including Lean Black Belt certification through the UMass Chan Interprofessional Trainee Quality Council.
· Encouragement and support for presenting QI work at local and national conferences.

The PEM Division collaborates closely with colleagues in both the UMass Chan Departments of Pediatrics and Emergency Medicine.
Opportunities for mentorship and collaboration with leaders in multiple fields including research, quality improvement, and administration across both departments.
Additional opportunities through the Divisions of Global Health, Health Advocacy, Toxicology, Ultrasound, and Emergency Medical Services.

20-bed pediatric emergency department with approximately 25,000 patient visits annually.

Opportunities to both teach and supervise UMass Chan medical students along with residents from multiple residency programs, including Pediatrics, Medicine/Pediatrics, Emergency Medicine, and Family Medicine.
