CTTRT Director

Dr. Elise Stevens is Director of the Center for Tobacco Treatment Research and Training (CTTRT) and an Assistant Professor in the Department of Population and Quantitative Health Sciences at UMass Chan Medical School. She is a health communication scientist whose research focuses on preventing tobacco and nicotine use and improving cessation through innovative communication strategies, digital interventions, and emerging technologies. Her work examines how advertising, product features, social media, and health messaging influence tobacco-related beliefs and behaviors, with the goal of informing evidence-based interventions, clinical practice, and public health policy.

Under Dr. Stevens' leadership, the CTTRT advances interdisciplinary research, education, and training to reduce the burden of tobacco and nicotine use. The Center collaborates with researchers, clinicians, healthcare systems, and community partners to develop, evaluate, and disseminate effective approaches to tobacco treatment and prevention while mentoring the next generation of tobacco control researchers and practitioners.

The CTTRT was founded in 1997 by Dr. Lori Pbert, who served as the Center's inaugural Director for more than 25 years. Through her leadership, the Center became an internationally recognized leader in tobacco treatment research, clinical innovation, and workforce training. Upon her retirement in 2023, Dr. Pbert assumed the role of Director Emeritus, and Dr. Stevens became Director, continuing the Center's mission to advance evidence-based tobacco treatment, prevention, and implementation science through research, education, and collaboration.
