For Aslyum Seekers and Lawyers

How do I get an evaluation?

The Process:

  1. First step for processing an asylum case is to submit an official request for an evaluation via our request form (see below).

    1. Please make sure the case has an affidavit from the client that can be shared to our team at the time of case submission.

    2. The case request form contains questions about evaluator preferences--if you are a lawyer submitting on behalf of your client, please make sure these responses reflect their preferences. We try our best to consider these to make for the best experience on both sides.

  2. Once the request is received, our team will work on matching you with the proper evaluation team.

    1. Our team will then reach out to schedule with your client and, if needed, an interpreter.

    2. This process may take some time so we request that you submit your case as soon as the need for an evaluation has been identified.

  3. Next, the evaluation team will conduct the appropriate amount of in-person and/or video sessions to gather information needed for a medical affidavit.

  4. Once the affidavit has been written, the team will reach back out to the lawyer and provide them with all the necessary information.

NOTE: This process may take up to 6 weeks from the initial request to the time the medical affidavit is complete since some cases may require multiple sessions with the client to ensure their comfort.

FOR LAWYERS

Reminder after you fill out the form:

If a provider does pick up your case, we will email you at this address. If you prefer a call, please send us a cell phone number where we can reach you. Once we contact you, please respond to us and to the provider within 3 business days. Providers who have not heard from you are free to choose another case. If there is no response within 7 days, we will assume your client no longer needs evaluation and close your case.  If you are able to arrange an evaluation elsewhere, please do let us know as soon as possible.

If your client requires an interpreter, the interpreter provided should be professionally trained and trauma-informed to ensure an accurate and fair evaluation.  Providers may have relevant language skills, but still find professional interpretation helpful for accuracy.

We have also attached a PDF of resources that you can provide to your client and they can reach out to us for any questions.

Overlaid on the globe are bold blue boxed words reading “Human Rights & Asylum Program.” At the bottom of the poster, the large acronym “UHRAP” appears in thick blue letters.
