Committee on Equal Opportunity and Diversity (CEOD)
The Committee on Equal Opportunity and Diversity (CEOD) is a standing committee that advises the Vice Chancellor for Diversity and Inclusion and the Diversity and Inclusion Office on efforts that strengthen UMass Chan's mission. The CEOD remains a key driver of UMass Chan's commitment to fostering an inclusive and equitable environment for all members of our community. Structured around four subcommittees Advocacy, Belonging, Education and Service, the CEOD continues to build pathways for engagement, learning and impact across campus.
Advocacy
The Advocacy Subcommittee promotes equity across and outside UMass Chan through empowerment and amplification of the voices, lived experiences, and professional knowledge of all members of our community. We are dedicated to ensuring equitable processes and robust protections for marginalized groups, creating a framework where advocacy is both safe and accessible for everyone. Our goal is to enhance and streamline our advocacy processes, while educating our community on the skills of becoming a confident, effective advocate. Our work spans across policies, patients, peers, and issues that strengthen our mission and how we live and work together. Guided by the values of collaboration, service, and innovation, we aim to enrich, expand, and advance the mission of UMass Chan through equitable community advocacy.

Service
The Service Subcommittee advances UMass Chan’s mission by creating opportunities for members of our community to serve and engage with communities across the Commonwealth. Guided by the values of service, compassion, collaboration, and humility, we seek to build meaningful, mutually beneficial relationships with community partners and respond thoughtfully to community-identified needs.
Our work includes volunteer opportunities, donation drives, and partnerships with community organizations. Through service and engagement, we strengthen connections between UMass Chan and the communities we serve, deepen our understanding of people’s experiences and needs, and support our shared commitment to health equity and better health for the people of the Commonwealth.

Education
The Education Subcommittee provides learning and professional development opportunities that strengthen our capacity to live UMass Chan’s mission and values. Guided by innovation, humility, accountability, collaboration, compassion, service, health equity, and belonging, we support inclusive pedagogy and build knowledge and skills that foster inclusive learning, working, research, and care environments.
The subcommittee also helps guide and support DRIVE (Diversity, Representation and Inclusion for Value in Education), an institutional initiative focused on strengthening educational excellence through inclusive pedagogy and sustained integration across faculty development, curriculum design, learner engagement, and organizational culture. Working in partnership with the Diversity and Inclusion Office, the Education Subcommittee contributes to the continued evolution of DRIVE and its integration across nursing, medical, and biomedical sciences education.
Together, this work strengthens UMass Chan’s capacity to educate future scientists, nurses, physicians, and other health professionals prepared to serve the people of the Commonwealth with excellence.

Belonging (NEW)
The Belonging Subcommittee works to build a campus culture where every person feels respected, connected, included, and supported. Guided by the values of belonging, compassion, humility, collaboration, and accountability, we create opportunities to strengthen relationships, foster meaningful connection, and support a shared sense of community across UMass Chan.
Our work recognizes that a strong culture of belonging helps people learn, teach, discover, collaborate, innovate, and serve at their best. By fostering an environment where people can contribute meaningfully and learn from one another, we strengthen UMass Chan’s capacity to advance health equity, educate future leaders in biomedical sciences, nursing, and medicine, and provide the knowledge, discovery, and care needed to serve the people of the Commonwealth.
