What is Clinical Informatics?
Clinical Informatics is the medical subspecialty focused on improving healthcare through the effective use of information technology, data, and clinical workflows. Clinical Informaticians work at the intersection of medicine, technology, quality improvement, operations, and research to enhance patient care and healthcare delivery.
Who is eligible to apply?
Applicants must have completed, or be on track to complete, an ACGME-accredited residency program in the United States and be board eligible or board certified in their primary specialty. Applicants from any ABMS-recognized specialty are encouraged to apply. International medical graduates are welcome to apply if they meet UMass Chan Graduate Medical Education eligibility requirements and are eligible for Massachusetts medical licensure.
Do I need prior informatics or programming experience?
No.
Applicants are not expected to have a computer science, engineering, or programming background. We welcome physicians from diverse specialties and experiences.
Demonstrated interest in quality improvement, healthcare technology, data analytics, digital health, research, or clinical systems is beneficial, but formal informatics training is not required.
Will I still practice medicine during fellowship?
Clinical Informatics is an ACGME-accredited fellowship that includes clinical time. Fellows continue practicing within the UMass Memorial Health System as an attending physician in their primary specialty while developing expertise in informatics. This will require a full Massachusetts medical license.
Can I work outside the UMass Memorial Health System during Fellowship
No.
Fellows participate in clinical activities, interdisciplinary meetings, operational projects, leadership experiences, and educational conferences throughout the health system.
Can I work remotely from another state?
No.
Although much of our informatics work and educational sessions are virtual, there are a number of experiences that are in person and would require a physical presence.
What kinds of projects will I work on?
Projects are individualized based on fellows' interests and faculty mentorship.

Are there opportunities to do research in clinical informatics?
Yes.
Fellows will have many opportunities to get involved in research projects if they are interested. Fellows are expected to participate in scholarly activity and complete projects suitable for presentation and publication. Faculty mentors work closely with fellows to develop projects aligned with their career goals.

Does the fellowship prepare me for board certification?
Yes.
The curriculum fulfills ACGME Clinical Informatics training requirements and prepares eligible fellows to sit for the American Board of Preventive Medicine (ABPM) Clinical Informatics board certification examination.
Do you sponsor visas?
No.
At this time, the UMass Chan Clinical Informatics Fellowship is not able to sponsor employment visas.
Applicants must already have unrestricted authorization to work in the United States and must be eligible to practice as a full-time attending physician in their primary specialty. Prior to the start of fellowship, fellows must meet all institutional credentialing requirements, possess the necessary documentation to work in the United States without employer sponsorship, and be eligible for full medical licensure in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts.
What licensing requirements are needed before starting fellowship?
Fellows must be eligible for a full, unrestricted Massachusetts medical license and must meet all institutional credentialing requirements before beginning clinical duties.
What is the duration of the fellowship?
The Clinical Informatics Fellowship is a 24-month, full-time ACGME-accredited training program.
How do I apply?
Applications are submitted through ERAS.
When are interviews conducted?
Selected applicants are invited for interviews during the fall recruitment season.
Interviews are conducted virtually during the recruitment cycle.

Prior programming experience is not required.
Can I pursue additional coursework or graduate education during fellowship?
Yes.
As part of the fellowship curriculum, all fellows complete 7 graduate-level credits through the Oregon Health & Science University (OHSU) Graduate Certificate in Clinical Informatics. These courses are a required component of the fellowship and provide a strong academic foundation in core clinical informatics principles.
The cost of the required OHSU coursework is fully covered by UMass Chan Medical School.
Is moonlighting permitted during the fellowship?
Yes.
Moonlighting is permitted, provided it is approved in accordance with UMass Chan Medical School and Graduate Medical Education (GME) policies. All moonlighting activities, whether internal or external, must be reported and approved in advance and must not interfere with fellowship responsibilities or educational requirements.
Fellows are responsible for ensuring that all moonlighting hours are included in their duty hour reporting and that they remain in compliance with ACGME and GME duty hour limits. Moonlighting may not cause a fellow to exceed the maximum work hours permitted by the GME (80 hours/week).

The UMass Chan Clinical Informatics Fellowship combines rigorous clinical informatics training with immersive experiences across one of New England's largest academic health systems. Fellows work alongside leaders in clinical operations, digital health, quality improvement, artificial intelligence, implementation science, and health services research while collaborating across UMass Memorial Health and multiple academic departments at UMass Chan Medical School.
What opportunities are available in artificial intelligence (AI) and digital health?
Artificial intelligence and digital health are integrated throughout the fellowship curriculum. Fellows gain exposure to AI, machine learning, natural language processing, clinical decision support, predictive analytics, remote patient monitoring, telehealth, and other emerging technologies through dedicated rotations, longitudinal projects, and faculty mentorship.
Will I work with Epic?
Yes.
Fellows receive Epic Physician Builder training and have the opportunity to participate in the design, implementation, optimization, and evaluation of the Epic electronic health record used throughout UMass Memorial Health. This hands-on experience allows fellows to work directly with clinical, operational, and IT teams to improve workflows and patient care.

Fellows can tailor their training based on their career goals. What types of rotations are included in the fellowship?
Will I earn any additional certifications during fellowship?
Yes.
In addition to ACGME-accredited fellowship training, fellows complete Epic Physician Builder training and pursue a Graduate Certificate in Health & Clinical Informatics through Oregon Health & Science University (OHSU), providing both practical and academic preparation for Board Certification and leadership in Clinical Informatics.

Each fellow is paired with dedicated faculty mentors who provide guidance in career development, scholarly activity, leadership, and clinical informatics projects. Fellows also collaborate with multidisciplinary experts across medicine, nursing, pharmacy, information technology, operations, data science, and research, fostering a rich learning environment.
