Quality Improvement and Patient Safety

3. QI Projects a. Overview: Residents are expected to participate in at least 1 group or individual QI project longitudinally during residency, with the goal of meeting the learning objectives below.  Residents will be introduced to ongoing projects and opportunities for new projects between July and November of their PGY1 year. Residents will “declare” their project by November of PGY1 year (or PGY2 year for Med/Peds). Each project will have a team leader who will coordinate meeting times. Each group will be expected to present at one “check in” per year during monthly QI conferences. Participation in the project will fluctuate during residency as the schedule allows. At least one member of each project team will present at the annual Resident QI and Scholarship day in May.   b. Learning Objectives
  • To describe the key features of a problem statement, and participate in crafting a problem statement
  • To understand the format of a fishbone diagram and perform a root cause analysis
  • To define project goals and develop appropriate tools to measure achievement of the goals
  • To develop implementable countermeasure(s) to help achieve the project goal
  • To outline the components of an A3
  • To participate one or more PDSA cycles
  • To create a run chart and other appropriate figures to display project results
  • To participate in at least one end-of-year slide presentation summarizing your work to peers and faculty
